Start with God
Divorce is one of the most painful experience in life. 50% of marriages end up in divorce leaving a trail of pain in the hearts of every person who had a stake in that marriage. What really happens when divorce occurs?
When we get married, we enter into a relationship that is dynamic. God is the author of marriage and the power that makes two into One Flesh. Matthew 19:6 says that what God has joined together let no one separate. God creates new life through the marriage of a man and a woman. Divorce destroys life and separates. When a marriage occurs, a personal relationship, an intimate relationship that did not exist before is born. When a marriage ends, man destroys what God created.
God wants that new life to be protected and nourished. Both husband and wife are bound by their vows before God to love one another unconditionally from start to finish, that is faithfulness, obedience and pleasing to God. The neglect or damage that may occur through either partner failing to keep the vows is a sin. Let’s listen to the heart of God as we read these verses….
Another thing you do: You flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer pays attention to your offerings
or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask “Why?” It is because the Lord is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth,
because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.
Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his.
And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring.
So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.
“I hate divorce” says the Lord God of Israel, “and I hate a man’s covering himself with violence as well as with his garment”, says the Lord Almighty.
So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.
